About

What Pension Trail is, and who it is for

Pension Trail is an independent UK service for people who think they may have a workplace pension they have lost track of. It does two things. First, it helps you build a complete list of the employers you have worked for and the schemes those employers ran — including the ones that have since closed, been bought out, or moved to an insurer. Second, it writes the letters that actually get answers: a short, precise enquiry to each scheme administrator, and a request to HMRC for your full employment history when you cannot remember where you worked.

It is built for people between roughly 45 and 65 who are trying to work out what they have before they decide anything, and for people sorting out the affairs of a parent or partner. No account is needed, and your employer list, notes and letters are stored on your own device. Your case is only sent to us when you ask for a letter pack to be built.

Pension Trail is built and maintained by a small independent team in the United Kingdom. We are not a pension provider, an adviser, a consolidator or a lead-generation business. No pension provider, consolidator, adviser or introducer pays for placement here, and nothing on the site is sold onward. We do not make recommendations about transfers, or about what you should do with a pension. We give you the facts, the free routes, and the letters.

You can read more about what we will never do, or see where to do most of this for free.

Your case stays in your browser until you ask for a letter pack.

While you build your case, your employer list, notes and letters are saved only on this device, in your browser's local storage. When you generate a letter pack, your case is sent to our server to build the documents. The free pack asks for no email and creates no order record, and its download links expire after 24 hours. If you buy a pack, we keep your email and case details so we can deliver it and let you download it again. Payments are handled by Stripe: we never see your card or bank details, never sell your data, and never refer your pensions onward to anyone.

Pension Trail is an information and document service, not financial advice. It does not recommend transferring, consolidating or releasing any pension. For guidance suited to you, speak to MoneyHelper — free and impartial — or a regulated financial adviser.
